first solo game
Sooo here goes. I made a lil game. I just followed the GMTK youtube tutorial to create this little game. Here's how that went :
First day : just following the steps in the video with my own "art" (a funny picture of one of my cats and one of our dog's paws).
Great tutorial, very easy to follow, extremely clear graphics & info. Pretty much flawless as far as I can tell (I don't know if the code & such is perfectly optimised, but it works, and that's all I ask of it for now.
Day 2 : made a main menu following a few different youtube tutorials & googling stuff. It's simple, but it does what I want to.
I also made the theme song using some cat meow samples and some simple synth sounds. (the melody and chords are made with meows, the bass & drums are "real" bass & drum sounds. Fun fact : the little purr when clicking on a menu is very close to the sound Rocket actually makes when he's running around looking to play.
Day 3 : making the animations for the ears & paws. It took HOURS to figure out how to get the animation to play whenever I press the spacebar. it ended up being quite simple, but I didn't know the answer, so it took a long time to figure out how to plug the animation into a script and tell the game to play the animation on a keypress. I think it could be simplified & unified, because now there's 2 scripts looking for keypresses, but it's fine. The game is tiny so it doesn't matter.
I debated if I wanted to add more features and work some more on the game, but I think I'm ready to move on and make another little game.
If anyone reading this knows of some nice tutorials for different types of games, send me a tweet or a comment on here or something. I'll check it out :)
